A campus network built to stay up

A high availability Fortinet network for an international school with several blocks. I designed and commissioned it: two core switches in MCLAG with VRRP gateway redundancy, PoE+ access switches in four buildings, and a redundant WAN switch pair that brings two ISP circuits into an HA firewall cluster.

Network Engineer

Univest Business Machines (UBM), Abu Dhabi

  • Deliver network, security, voice and server infrastructure for government, education, energy and corporate clients across the UAE, owning projects from site survey and BOQ through configuration, commissioning, documentation and handover.
  • Configure and support switching and routing estates from Cisco, Fortinet, Juniper, Huawei, Aruba, Sophos and Netgear.
  • Deploy firewall HA pairs, policy and NAT rulebases, ACLs, DHCP snooping, dynamic ARP inspection and 802.1X device onboarding.
  • Roll out wireless across sites with several buildings, separating staff, student and guest traffic and tuning RF after deployment.
  • Build and migrate IP telephony on 3CX, Avaya, Yealink and Cisco, including SIP trunks, voice VLANs and call quality tuning.
  • Build and run Windows Server, Linux, Proxmox VE and SAN or NAS environments, with scheduled backups and restore verification.
  • Write client submittals, BOQs, network diagrams and as built documents, run commissioning walkthroughs and train client IT staff.
  • Handle L2 and L3 troubleshooting and change management on live networks, and drive vendor support cases with FortiCare, Huawei and Cisco through to resolution.

  • Ran the operation on my own before joining UBM and have continued it since: consultation, specification, sourcing, build, delivery and after sales support.
  • Match every machine to its workload, budget and upgrade path, then handle assembly, cable management, BIOS and firmware, thermal and acoustic tuning, stability testing and benchmarking.
  • Advise on displays and colour accuracy, input devices, audio, capture and streaming, and diagnose faults and plan upgrades for existing machines.

I am the founder of Taniro, an all in one Android app for onsite IT engineers. One app to fill in, sign and send reports, survey Wi-Fi, measure with the camera, connect to switches and firewalls, scan the network and map racks.

Under the Taniro umbrella we are also working on an online technical support platform for professional IT services.
